Fire Extinguishers - clarification

This advice has now been superseded - a further call to MAST has confirmed that no fire equipment is required on any of our boats that don't have an engine. The following information is therefore incorrect but is kept on-line for tracking purposes:
This always becomes a point of discussion. I have just asked MAST for clarification. A fire extinguisher is required in all craft with an engine. The only craft not required to carry a fire extinguisher are those classified as 'Lightweight Craft' such as kayaks, canoes, stand-up-paddle boards - the Derwent skiffs are only boats in our fleet that I would consider to be 'Lightweight Craft'. Although our whaleboats do not have engines they will be provided with fire extinguishers. Yesterday I saw 1kg fire extinguishers for sale at $22 in a hardware shop in Hobart but did not confirm whether they meet the MAST required rating of 5BE. If you have serious concerns that carrying a fire extinguisher in your boat will compromise safety please contact the tn19 Raid Coordinator: info@tawe-nunnugah.org
