Notice to Mariners:

Valid from: 6 May 2015  until 31 December 2015.

'Migrating and calving whales are expected to be seen in Tasmanian waters between May and December 2015 inclusive.   During the migration period, it is expected that whale sightings may be common, and sightings are increasing in areas of high vessel use such as the Derwent and Tamar Rivers and the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Last year, a number of juvenile humpbacks remained in the Derwent River/Storm Bay area for several months.
Mariners are advised to navigate with due care and appropriate caution around any whale activity, including adhering to an appropriate speed suitable to maintain safe navigation. Vessels should not approach whales closer than 100 m. Guidelines for safe navigation around whales can be found at Whale & Dolphin Viewing Guidelines (http://bit.ly/1dOiDlS).   Mariners are urged to report any sightings of whales to the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment’s 24hr Whale Hotline on 0427 WHALES (0427 942 537), and to the relevant port authority if in a port’s vicinity.   Mariners are advised to navigate with caution.
