Here's the July update from the Franklin Working Waterfront Association letting us know the latest news and giving us a heads up about membership renewals and Annual General Meetings, membership of subcommittees and volunteers at the Wooden Boat Centre. if you are interested in any of these roles, an email or phone call on the contact details at the bottom of the newsletter should get things going. Or perhaps you could just drop in!

AGM and FWWA membership

The 2019 Franklin Working Waterfront Association AGM will be held at 2:30pm on the 29th of September at the Wooden Boat Centre. This is the time for anyone interested in joining the Committee to put their hand up! The Committee is an excellent way to contribute to the WBC and the larger community and we would love to hear from any potential members. If you have any questions, please get in contact with us at committee@woodenboatcentre.com or call Graham on 0400 334 216. The nomination form will be on our website in the coming month. Potential committee members or not, we invite all interested to attend though only members of FWWA can vote. Make sure to stick around afterwards for the BBQ!

This is a perfect time to remind you all to make sure you’re a FWWA member! For $10 a year, members receive a 5% discount on WBC merchandise, free entry to a WBC tour when you bring a guest and the ability to vote at the AGM. Renewals for those that are already members are also due. The membership form can be found below or by emailing info@woodenboatcentre.com. It will also soon be available on the website.

Membership subcommittee

Another way to contribute to the WBC is by joining our membership subcommittee. We realise that our volunteers and FWWA members are integral to the Wooden Boat Centre’s operation and are keen to establish clear channels of communication between volunteers and the Management Committee. We have therefore decided to set up a subcommittee who will:

  • Look after FWWA membership applications
  • Keep the membership records up to date
  • Meet with members to gauge their thoughts on how we operate our Front of House and Tours
  • Liaise with the membership with regards to the Management Committees plans and decisions
  • Organise a Working with Vulnerable People training night for all volunteers and staff
We are looking for 3-4 members of the FWWA community to join Management Committee member Stan in establishing better lines of communication through the duties above.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the operation of the WBC and we encourage anyone interested to contact the Committee at committee@woodenboatcentre.com

Website updates and new courses

In the past month, Paul has tirelessly been updating the Wooden Boat Centre’s website as well as refining our current courses and developing some brand new ones! Not only do we now have an updated course calendar, Paypal and direct banking for the skin on frame kayak raffle (which closes on the 30th August!), and an updated portfolio but the website now also gives an introduction to our some of our staff and volunteers. Perhaps the most exciting section of the website though is our newest course offering.

We’re very pleased to be able to offer a Shipwrights level 1 course at the Wooden Boat Centre for the first time commencing in February 2020. An intensive one-year course, this is a fantastic opportunity to begin the profession of wooden boat building. The website lists the course’s finer details including course content and application deadlines so read about it there or contact Paul on 03 6266 3586 for more details.

It’s brilliant to hear that we’re welcoming some new volunteers (as well as welcoming back some old ones!) and filling up many of our course enrolments. If you’d like to donate some time to us, please contact Jen on 6266 3586.

There has been a flurry of activity at the Centre recently, with brand new merchandise on the shelves, talks with the Cartela Trust and the development of a Huon Valley bus tour and our latest raffle. This is a great reminder of how wonderful our volunteers and staff are and how we couldn’t do without them! The Management Committee would like to thank you all for your time and effort and in particular to Mike, Jen, Paul and Sylvia for their passion and dedication.

Stay warm and as always, please contact the Management Committee at committee@woodenboatcentre.com or speak to members of the Executive directly (Graham, Alan and Helen) if you have any queries. Hope to see you at the AGM!
