At the top of the LBT webpage is a link to 'WillyWeather tide, wind and weather (Castle Forbes Bay)'. A question which is of perennial interest is 'how good are the tide predictions compared to actual observations?'. A while ago Brian Marriott suggested that the river height at Huonville (the nearest point measured by BOM) would be a good proxy for observation, and we agreed. The BOM data can be found at http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDT60252/IDT60252.094180.plt.shtml and http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDT60252/IDT60252.094180.tbl.shtml. Comparative plots, first from WillyWeather, then from BOM are shown below. As can be seen, the answer to the question is that reality is a lot fuzzier than prediction, but the predictions are fairly close. Anybody who wants to delve further and report back is welcome. |
