The Swiftsure Regatta was postponed last week due to bad weather but the forecast for this Sunday (13 December) is looking great. The annual event has an emphasis on having a go for all, and fun, for families, newcomers, residents and visitors to the Valley. At 9.30am the Roger Harwood Race is a traditional wooden dinghy rowing event that anyone may join – currently there are record-winners amongst the four entrants, including one in his eighties. The whaleboat Swiftsure will be on the water with new thole pins to test in the form of “Come and Try events” and time trials throughout the day. At 10.30, the St Ayles Skiffs 1km pursuit begins and there are already crews keen to take out the honour. Join a team and enjoy the challenge of completing the two-turn course. At 12noon there is a BBQ followed by the “Rat-race” at 1pm for small sail boats such as the Grebes.
For those keen to observe there are short trips on board the 100 year-old MV Nancy from 1.30pm, followed by a book launch at 3pm “The Story of St Ayles Skiffs in Australia”, where it all started at the LBT. Join in to celebrate the boats, the people, the opportunities at the Living Boat Trust in the Huon Valley.
