Up until the 1960's Montagu whalers were standard issue on navy capital ships. See for instance this training film taken off Malta in the mid 1950's: http://bit.ly/1FyILr3. There are now very few of these boats kicking around, but one has come to the Wooden Boat Centre. It's going to take a bit of restoration: got loose on the Mersey in a flood a few years ago, and has been sitting in a yard ever since. It could have been this very boat that 'The lament of the Montagu Whaler' was written for: listen to http://bit.ly/1aGcxlB (thanks to Barb Dawson for that one).
