I thought you might enjoy this link, sent to us by a sailor friend in Queensland who spends a lot of his year working in Seattle near the Centre for Wooden Boats. 

'Kirkkovene' are Finnish 'church boats', and this documentary dates from 1938The boating tradition continues in sport - they pack 'em in.  Caption for the pic below: 

"Finnish Church Boat Rowing Team has completed its practice run and is ready to face the challenge of Sulkavan Suursoudut, the biggest single rowing competition in the world. Sulkava, Finland in 2002."  ref
