John Walduck's boat

John has supplied more information about the boat he is building which we reported on in a previous item in this column.

'An Ian Oughtred design " Penny Fee" which is like a big Grebe. 16 ft by 5ft 4in, so about 2ft 6in longer than the Grebe and about a foot wider, but similar lines. I intend to set it up as a gaff yawl ( something like Martin's "Hop the Wag").It was an impulse buy - a fellow member of Wooden Boat Assoc of Qld (who also lived in Kingaroy, but I didn't know him) had a kit in his shed for 9+ years and did nothing with it. He put it up for sale as he was moving house to overseas, and I bought it!   Then I had to make room to build it. Took a bit to rearrange my shed to fit things in!  A good project for social distancing.'

For those who are thinking this sounds familiar, apparently a 'Penny Fee' visited Franklin after the 2017 Wooden Boat Festival:  see pic below and story by Ken MacMahon on the Wooden Boat Association site:  https://www.woodenboat.asn.au/34-uncategorised/391-building-the-alma-j.html
