Victim

Hi Team Movies,

This month Team Movies are screening the classic 1961 British film, Victim.

Staring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms this 1961 film has been widely credited with impacting British support of gay rights.

Synopsis:  Dirk Bogarde, in a career-defining role, plays a highly respected, but closeted, attorney who risks his marriage and reputation to bring to justice an elusive blackmail ring terrorizing gay men. (Courtesy Jim’s Reviews)

Victim:  rated M (adult themes)

5 reasons to head on down to the Palais on Sunday 1 April 2018

1: In the early sixties, when director Basil Dearden made Victim, public exposure meant not only disgrace but possibly jail. Victim was then perhaps the most daring film to appear on the British screen and was it the first film in which the word "homosexual" was spoken. (Courtesy Jim’s Reviews)

2: Originally released in 1961, six years before homosexuality was decriminalised in the United Kingdom, the film was highly controversial, earned an "X" rating from the British censors and was for a time banned in the United States. How times have changed.

3: Victim was a surprise hit at the box office, and many regard it as the work that finally stirred Parliament to begin amending Britain's cruel and archaic laws against "homosexual acts”.

4: It was the only British entry in the Venice Film Festival in 1961, where an Italian critic commented: "at last the British have stopped being hypocrites". (Courtesy Wikipedia).

5: Our trusty guide Rotten Tomatoes rates Victim 5 stars. I will say no more.
