A sailing rig for the Skiff

We know (and love) our St Ayles Skiffs as rowing boats, but on longer expeditions it is nice to be able to hoist a sail and take a break.  Iain Oughtred, the designer of the Skiff, has come up with the sprit sail rig shown below.  Rob Ayliffe points out the following virtues:

  • no head banging boom;
  • reefable;
  • easily rolled up, and stowable, within the boat.
The thinking is that it's for raids and voyaging, and general around the club ‘mucking about' in boats: not for regattas.
