"Anitra V crewed by LBT team for Cygnet Regatta "
"Visiting Sydney based classic timber yacht "Anitra V" was crewed by a team of sailors from the LBT for the 3 Day Cygnet Regatta over the March long weekend.
The team consisting of Martin Kell, Mathew Pitt, Steve Tandy, Michael Townley O'Neil and Andy Bullock joined owner Philip Brown for the 3 days staying on board in Kettering and Cygnet during the 3 day event.
Whilst the winds were light and variable, with at least one glass-out during each race, the Regatta was most enjoyable. Anitra 's crew entertained themselves in the light conditions by setting not just one spinnaker but 3 extras which included the rarely seen racing sails from the 1960's of a "blooper " and "cheater" along with the conventional symmetric spinnaker.
Anitra V is 60 years old having been launched for the 1956 sailing season. Designed, built and sailed by the Halvorsen brothers Trygve and Magnus, the boat had an illustrious ocean racing career having completed 13 Sydney-Hobart races with a win and 3 second places on handicap in the first 4 years when raced by the Halvorsen brothers. She won in 1957 and was second by only 11 minutes in her first Hobart race in 1956. Also the Halvorsens shipped the boat to Los Angeles in 1959 to compete in the TransPac race to Hawaii after which the 2 brothers and another crewman sailed her back to Sydney in time for the 1959 Sydney-Hobart race.
Philip Brown, her current caretaker/owner, continues racing and ocean cruising the boat from Sydney and is currently spending a few months in Tasmania following being involved as an exhibitor at the recent AWBF in Hobart.
Philip sends his congratulations and thanks to each of the crew for making the weekend such a success."
