Mark Burgin is organising this informal, catered event at the Shed from 3-5pm next Saturday.  More details will be provided through this column when they come to hand.  Mark has written the following.

'Laurence Burgin - sailor, boatbuilder, ship chandler, teacher and friend to many in the Huon Valley and wider boating community.

Laurence grew up in Sydney and his love of sailing took him around the world before setting up Marine Stainless, a successful fabrication business that operated in Mooloolaba and later Sydney. After a number of Sydney to Hobart yacht races introduced him to the delights of Tasmania, he relocated to Franklin in 2009 and established Franklin Marine which brought much needed fishing and boating supples to the marine community of the Huon Valley and beyond. This later expanded to include Franklin Marina and his businesses served the boating fraternity until Laurence sold them in late 2017 due to ill health. The ongoing success of Franklin Marine & Marina is one of Laurence’s proudest legacies.

As well as the chandlery and retail business, Laurence was known and respected for his teaching and mentoring skills. His Diesel Maintenance, Cruising Preparation and Marine Electrics courses brought much needed skills to local boating enthusiasts. He was also a strong supporter of the Living Boat Trust, The Wooden Boat Festival and was a proud sponsor of the local yacht clubs. He worked closely with MAST to improve the navigation marks up the Huon River to make the waterway a safer and more enjoyable place for all.

Laurence passed away peacefully on Wednesday with his faithful dog Louie by his side and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.'
